Betty Joan (Davis) Edwards, 91, of Winchester, VA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Spring Arbor in Winchester, surrounded by her family.
Betty was born on February 7,1933 in Winchester, VA, the daughter of the late Randall Thomas Davis, Sr. and Lyda Dewar (Royston) Davis. She married Harold Robert “Bob” Edwards on June 25, 1955, in Winchester, and he preceded her in death on August 11, 2018. Her brother, Randall Thomas Davis, Jr. also preceded her in death. Betty was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.
Betty was a 1951 graduate of John Handley High School in Winchester and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Longwood University in Farmville, VA. Betty represented this university as a princess at the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in 1952.
Betty was the first 4th grade teacher at Quarles Elementary School in Winchester when it first opened its doors. She was very proud of this and talked about it often. Once her son was born in 1959, she became a homemaker. Her greatest joy was taking care of her children and family. When her son and daughter were young, she was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troop Leader for both of their troops. She was also a member of and past president of the Hawthorne Branches Garden Club, while serving also as a volunteer for the Hawthorne Branches Jr. Garden Club of which her daughter was a member. When her children were in high school, Betty volunteered as a teacher’s aide and around 1975 she worked as a mediator at John Handley High School to help with conflict resolution. Also, in her later years, she decided to open her own store, and was the owner/operator of the Trumpet Vine Cottage in Winchester. Betty was also a lifelong member of Market Street United Methodist Church where she served in various teaching positions there. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, birds, and cooking; often hosting large dinner parties with her delicious meals. She was loved by many and will always be known as the sweetest lady with a beautiful smile and a gentle kindness to everyone she met. She left a positive impact on everyone she met.
Betty is survived by her children, Harold Robert “Chip” Edwards, Jr. (the late Teresa), Elizabeth “Beth” Randall Edwards Washinger (Craig), grandchildren, Marie Edwards Nelson, Sallie Jaclyn Edwards (Tim Wilson), Jacob Randall Washinger, and Grace Rosemary Washinger, along with many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
A graveside service will be held for Betty on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 2pm in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia, followed by a celebration of life at 2:30pm at Omps Funeral Home, 1600 Amherst St. Winchester, VA 22601. If you are unable to attend the graveside service, the family would still like to welcome you to the celebration of life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Betty to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork St., Suite 405, Winchester, VA 22601; the American Heart Association, National Direct Response Headquarters, P.O. Box 756, Osceola, WI 54020; or Market Street United Methodist Church, 131 S.
