Benjamin Winfield Burkhart, 89 of Winchester passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, peacefully at his home.
Ben was born in 1936 in Needmore, WV, the son of the late Virgie and Virdie Burkhart. He served our country in the United States Army and then the Army National Guard rising to the rank of Staff Sgt. He worked in sales for Ashworth Brothers and then as a Police Officer for the Winchester Police Dept. Ben was a benefactor for the NRA and a member of the Winchester Rescue Squad, and Jaycees. He also worked installing and setting up voting machines. Ben was a member of Winchester Moose Lodge, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He loved to hunt, do woodworking, and was a gunsmith and firearms enthusiast. Ben loved dancing in his younger years with his late wife, Lucy.
He married Lucille “Lucy” Luttrell on January 4, 1958, at Redland UMC and she preceded him in death on August 1, 2022.
Ben is survived by his daughter, Sheri Reed and her husband Craig of Stephens City.
In addition to his parents and wife, Ben is preceded in death by his sister, Betty and his brother, Donald.
A visitation will be on Thursday, September 25, 2025, from 6pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A service will be conducted for Ben on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11am at Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Michael Copeland and Rev. Chris Porter.
