Ann JANNEY, age 75, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022. Ann was born September 22, 1946.
Born in Winchester, Virginia, she was the daughter of Ellen Huyett Janney and Crawford Monroe Janney. As had been her desire, she passed away peacefully in her lovely home in Phoenix, Arizona.
Ann is survived by her sister, Susan Janney, 5 nieces and nephews, and 7 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, William James Janney; and sister, Jane Janney Wilkens.
Her education began in 1952 when she entered Triplett Elementary School, Mt. Jackson, VA, followed by attendance at Stonewall Jackson High School, where she was active in the 4-H Club (Sewing Club and Dairy Club); and graduated from Central High School, Woodstock, VA, in 1964.
Mt. Jackson Methodist Church was Ann’s ‘home church’ for many years and was the location of her marriage to Wayne Clem, of Edinburg, VA, in 1967.
In 1968, Ann graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) earning a Bachelor of Science degree, Major: Chemistry, Minor: Math, with Teacher Certification.
From 1969 until 1984, Ann taught Chemistry and Science at Marshall High School, Falls Church, VA. A hobby she enjoyed was Drag Racing, (1968 blue Camaro) winning multiple races, and had the trophies to prove it!
In 1984, Ann experienced a life-changing motorcycle accident. Multiple surgeries and lengthy rehabilitation were somewhat successful, in that she could walk, but only with full leg braces, crutches, neck brace, and life-long pain and complications from her multiple injuries.
In spite of her limitations, she returned to teaching (1986 – 1996) at Central High School, Woodstock, VA, where she taught Math and Science, plus served as a coach for the Cheer Leading Squad and was active in the production of multiple high school Drama presentations.
In 1997 she bravely flew alone to Phoenix, AZ, to begin a series of multiple, extended visits with her cousin, Betty Bruce, and her husband, Chris Thompson, to explore the benefits of warmer, drier weather. The success of these visits lead to her decision to move to Phoenix in 2003.
Ann quickly embraced life in Phoenix, making many new friends, becoming very active in The Church of the Beatitudes; serving as a Peer Mentor for ABIL, Arizona Bridge to Independent Living; participating in her Educators’ Sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, serving several terms as ADK Chapter President; yet remaining involved with her family, making several return visits each year, staying as long as needed; remaining involved with the VA Retired Teachers Association.
Life in Arizona was good for Ann! Several individuals were very instrumental in helping her achieve success: Dr. Joseph A. Longo III, Orthopedic Surgeon, who made it possible for her to walk without leg braces! Vicky Vos, CNA, who untiringly assisted her nearly daily; and Chris Thompson who drove many miles to take her to medical appointments, and remained always as her nightly ‘check-in’ call.
A private burial was held on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Hopewell Meeting House Cemetery in Clear Brook, VA. Local arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Winchester, VA.
Ann requested, in lieu of flowers, that Memorial Contributions may be made to Hopewell Center Meeting, c/o James Riley, Treasurer, P.O. Box 165, Winchester, VA. 22604.
