Anina deZeng Hills Glaize

WINCHESTER, VA Anina deZeng Hills Glaize, 97, formerly of Fayetteville, NY, and Sanibel, FL, died Sunday, September 4, 2011, in Winchester.

Mrs. Glaize was born, in Mapleshade, NJ, to Henry Lawrence deZeng and Anina C. deZeng. She was a graduate of the Roberts Beach School and attended Sarah Lawrence College. She was preceded in death by husbands, Holden F. Hills, of Syracuse, NY, and Frederick L. Glaize, Jr., of Winchester. She is survived by her daughter, Anina. H. Hodge, of Algonquin, IL, her sons, Peyton deZ. Hills, Syracuse, NY, and Holden F. Hills, Jr., Pittsfield, MA, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Elizabeth Glaize Helm and step-son, Frederick L. Glaize, II, both of Winchester, VA.

Mrs. Glaize played an active role in several Syracuse-area organizations. She served as trustee of the Syracuse Medical Dispensary and president of its Auxiliary; president of the Women’s Founders Group of Community General Hospital of Syracuse; president of the board of the Syracuse Visiting Nurse Association; and trustee of Syracuse Memorial Hospital. In 1967 the Syracuse Post Standard awarded Mrs. Glaize its Woman of Achievement Award for Community Service.

Mrs. Glaize also chaired the Syracuse Junior League’s volunteer committee and served on its executive committee; was president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Syracuse Boys’ Club; and served on the board of the District Attorney’s Advisory Council. She was a member of DeWitt Community Church and of its altar guild.

After she moved to Sanibel, FL, Mrs. Glaize was invited to join the board of the Sanibel Community Association. She also was vice chair of the Sanibel Home Rule Study Group and served on the boards of “Sanibel Tomorrow,” Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and the Caretta Research Project. Mrs. Glaize also was a member of the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum Founding Committee. She was a member of the Sanibel Historical Museum and served as general manager of the Sanibel Shell Fair and Show. Her community involvement extended to Fort Myers, FL, where she was a founding member of the Fort Myers University Club and a board member of the Fort Myers Community Concerts Board.

After more than 60 years of community service, Mrs. Glaize moved to Winchester, where she was active for several years in the Winchester-Clarke Garden Club. Her avid interest in her community and her environment continued until her death.

Private interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, NY. A memorial service will be held at Westminster-Canterbury, Winchester, at a date to be determined.
