Alice Joan (Tobin) Hillyard, 78 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Rose Hill in Berryville.

Joan was born in 1945 in Winchester, VA the daughter of the late William and Virginia Tobin. She was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1964. Joan retired in 1995 as a secretary for Verizon. When starting her career at the age of 18, she began as a switchboard operator at C&P Telephone Company. She thoroughly enjoyed cooking and hosting family and friends. Spending time with her grandchildren was one of her greatest joys.

She married Edward Earl “Big Ed” Hillyard, Jr. on December 5, 1965, in Winchester, VA and he preceded her in death on January 7, 2020.

Joan is survived by her children, Edward E. Hillyard, III (Jennifer) of Winchester, VA and Angela Hillyard of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Austin Hartman of Winchester, VA and Addison and Mason Hillyard, both of Winchester, VA and her brother, William Tobin of Winchester, VA.

Along with her parents and husband, Joan is preceded in death by her sisters, Edna Tobin, Peggy Newcome, Wanda Hartley and Mary Brooks.

Services for Joan will be private.
